Fan

Fan gives Scrooge a memory of being loved. Remembering her makes his rejection of her son harder to justify.

Finds her lonely brother → Brings him home → Leaves a loving memory → Connects Scrooge to Fred

Love breaks isolation

“a solitary child, neglected by his friends” — Narrator about young Scrooge, Stave 2
paired with “to bring you home, home, home!” — Fan, Stave 2

The lonely description creates sympathy without excusing the adult miser. Fan’s repeated noun makes home a promise of connection and release.

Memory points to a present duty

“a large heart!” — Ghost about Fan, Stave 2
paired with “Your nephew!” — Ghost reminding Scrooge of Fred, Stave 2

The emotional image defines her through generosity. The abrupt reminder joins past affection to a person Scrooge can still welcome; memory becomes an ethical demand.

Push the argument

Her small physical presence and courage make affection seem powerful without wealth or status. Do not confuse Fan with Belle.

Recall

How does Fan’s memory change the meaning of Fred’s repeated invitations?
